February 10, 2025

GROVE CITY- Rep. Tim Bonner (R-Mercer/Butler) released the following statement regarding George Junior Republic’s Jeremiah Sturgeon Chapel’s nomination for consideration to be named to the National Register of Historic Places. The Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office met on Feb. 4 and approved the nomination to place the chapel on to the National Register of Historic Places overseen by the National Park Service. The National Park Service then has 45 days to review the nomination.

“Jeremiah Sturgeon Chapel in Pine Township, Mercer County, is a significant part of the Grove City community. The inclusion on the National Register will allow George Junior Republic to apply for critical grant funding for the chapel to preserve the integrity of the building.

“It is important to preserve and honor the legacy of this historic treasure. I was pleased to give my full support to the nomination and look forward to final approval by the National Park Service.”

The National Register of Historic Places was established in 1966 to help coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect historic and archeological resources.
